first_imgYaya Toure backing Man City: But Liverpool scarily goodby Paul Vegas9 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveFormer Manchester City captain Yaya Toure is impressed by Premier League leaders Liverpool. However, he insists City will still successfully defend their title this season. He told Sky Sports: “Pep is going to try and win the treble or the quadruple.”The big question has been for City, if they win the league, will it also be the Champions League, the FA Cup or the League Cup?”But I think this season he will go for all of them. He has a big squad or talented and young players.”But if he had the choice, I think the Champions League is the bigger one.”Maybe the League Cup and the FA Cup could be distracting because at this moment in time the Champions League is the big target for the club.”Toure continued: “It is far more difficult to win a treble or a quadruple in England than in Spain.”In La Liga you have the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona, who are winning the league and the cups and the champions league consistently, but in the Premier League the physicality is so high and it is the toughest league in the world.”I hope Pep can do it with City. It won’t be easy because Liverpool are currently looking scarily good but let’s believe.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

first_imgXhaka explains Arsenal captaincy processby Freddie Taylor21 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveArsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has spoken about the process that lead to him being announced as the club’s official captain. The Gunners were on the lookout for a new skipper since Laurent Koscielny left in the summer. After several months of discussions, Xhaka was named by manager Unai Emery as the club captain after a voting process amongst the players.”The coach asked us to write five names, who we wanted to be the captains,” Xhaka said of the process to the club website. “Everything was discreet, so there were no names. You only wrote the five captains. In the end, I think the team, the players and of course the boss, decided who would be the first captain out of the five.”Of course it’s important that the other players believe in me and see how I work, how much I work. I’m a guy who wants to take all the players in one boat. We win together, we lose together, we win trophies together or we lose finals together, like in Baku.”It’s important that all the players – not only the players who play but the other players as well – are invited into our group to be happy, to speak with us if there are any problems. “This is the role of a captain, to be strong and to be in front of the team. I think I’m a guy like this who can be in front of the team during the good times and the bad times.” About the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

  • Rivals Writer Tells Recruits To Boycott Louisville After Cardinals Pull Offer From Commit

first_imgEarlier today, Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino made headlines when he pulled the scholarship offer from Irmo (S.C.) Dutch Fork running back Matt Colburn, who had been committed to the Cardinals since June. According to multiple reports, Colburn was offered the opportunity to “greyshirt” and join the Louisville program next January, but he doesn’t seem likely to take it.Colburn, South Carolina’s Mr. Football in 2014, told one reporter he was “pretty livid“ with the development. However, his anger would had to have been quite high to reach the level of rage felt by Jim Baxter, publisher of is the affiliate covering high school football in the Palmetto State. Baxter, who runs the site, took to Twitter to unleash a barrage of angry tweets at the Louisville staff, even going so far as to urge South Carolina high school coaches to prevent their players from looking at the Cards. Here’s what Baxter had to say:baxter3 baxter2Baxter pulled zero punches in his mini-rant, clearly showing how heated he was. Recruiting around this time of the year always gets crazy, and this appears to be the latest example of what can happen right before signing day.Interestingly, several Twitter users responding to Baxter mentioned the case Louisville defensive end and 2015 NFL Draft prospect Lorenzo Mauldin. Mauldin, an Atlanta native, originally committed to South Carolina in high school but had his scholarship pulled as a result of oversigning right before Signing Day 2011. He eventually signed with the Cardinals and had an outstanding career. Here is hoping that Colburn’s story turns out similarly.last_img read more

  • Report: Man City 2 Liverpool 1

first_imgLeroy Sane’s 72nd-minute strike proved decisive as Manchester City reinvigorated their title defence and ended Liverpool’s unbeaten Premier League run with a crucial 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium.Roberto Firmino looked to have sealed a potentially vital point for leaders Liverpool in the title race when he equalised just past the hour, but Sane struck soon after, confirming the Reds’ first league defeat of the season in their 21st game and moving City to second and within four points of the summit.Liverpool were mightily unlucky not to take an early lead when a defensive mix-up between John Stones and Ederson followed Sadio Mane hitting the post, but they survived and finished the first half well – Sergio Aguero netting in ruthless fashion. Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Firmino restored parity in the 64th minute and City initially looked rattled, as if they could see the Premier League trophy moving out of sight, until Sane found the bottom-right corner to breathe life into their challenge once again.A lively City start faded and they had a lucky escape in the 17th minute. Mohamed Salah released Mane into the box and the Senegal forward hit the post before Stones blasted his clearance against Ederson and hastily scrambled to clear off the line.Vincent Kompany was fortunate to avoid being sent off for a wild lunge on Salah 14 minutes later and City capitalised on that let-off just before the break.Bernardo Silva played a low cross from the left towards the near post, where Aguero nipped in front of Dejan Lovren and emphatically smashed past Alisson from a seemingly impossible angle.Liverpool hit back 26 minutes from time, however, as Andrew Robertson latched on to a lofted pass and played a volleyed cross for Firmino to bury with a stooping header. But City were not done. They caught Liverpool on the break and Sane found the net via the right post after being played into the box by Raheem Sterling.A Liverpool onslaught followed, with Ederson tipping a Salah effort wide, before Bernardo Silva and Sterling missed glorious chances to finish the Reds off – luckily for them, no fightback came and the champions held on.37 – Most goals in Premier League matches between ‘big six’ clubs since the start of the 2011-12 season:37 Sergio Aguero21 Harry Kane20 Wayne Rooney18 Robin van Persie17 Eden HazardPhenomenal. — OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) January 3, 2019 What does it mean? Aguero vital on the big occasion…again It is difficult to be surprised by Aguero these days, given how impressive he has been at this level for so many years, but his goal on Thursday was his 37th against the ‘big six’ in the Premier League since 2011-12. Harry Kane is closest to him with 21 goals. There really is no one else like him in England in terms of effectiveness in the big games. The win also gives City much-needed momentum and halts the relentless charge of Liverpool, who would have gone nine points clear of Tottenham and 10 ahead of City with a win.Sane the spark to reignite City’s hopes While his goal was undoubtedly a highlight, for its quality and importance, Sane also deserves praise for his general performance as he was a constant outlet on the left and caused Trent Alexander-Arnold plenty of issues.Lovren targeted It was plain to see for much of the match that Lovren was identified by City as Liverpool’s weak link. He picked up an early yellow card and was then caught on his heels by Aguero for his goal. In a game of this magnitude, there is not much coming back from that.Key Opta Facts:- Man City ended Liverpool’s unbeaten Premier League start to the season in the 21st match – only Arsenal in 2003-04 (38 games), Man Utd in 2010-11 (24) and Man City in 2017-18 (22) have had longer unbeaten starts to a Premier League season.- This was only Man City’s second win in their last 12 matches against Liverpool in all competitions (D3 L7), winning at the Etihad in the Premier League in each of the last two seasons.- Since the start of the 2011-12 season, Sergio Aguero has scored 37 Premier League goals for Man City in meetings between ‘big six’ clubs – 16 more than any other player.- Liverpool have lost 10 of their 25 matches in all competitions under Jurgen Klopp in the month of January (W8 D7), making up 29 per cent of his total defeats as Reds boss (10 of 35).- Aguero has scored in all seven of his Premier League appearances for Manchester City against Liverpool at the Etihad, scoring one goal in each game.- Liverpool conceded more than once in a Premier League game for the first time since drawing 2-2 at West Bromwich Albion in April.- Man City won a Premier League match against a team starting the day top of the table for the first time since winning 2-1 against Liverpool in December 2013.What’s next? City have FA Cup and EFL Cup ties with Rotherham United and Burton Albion, respectively, coming up over the next six days, before returning to league action at home to Wolves on January 14. Nuno Espirito Santo’s men are the Reds’ next opponents on Monday in the FA Cup, before travelling to Brighton and Hove Albion five days later. read morelast_img read more
